Top 6 FTX Cryptocurrency Films to Watch in 2023

Hollywood is very interested in the story of how Sam Bankman-Fried’s cryptocurrency exchange failed. Several projects are already in the works. Even people who don’t care about cryptocurrencies have heard about what happened to FTX. The scandalous exchange got a lot of attention in the news, and several Hollywood producers said they wanted to make a movie about Bankman-Fried and his friends.

1. Movie Based on the Book by Michael Lewis

By far, the most well-known FTX film project in the works is a movie based on the book by Michael Lewis. The best-selling author of The Big Short and Wall Street’s High-Frequency Revolution had spent six months with Bankman-Fried and was about to write a story about his meteoric rise and his “effective altruism” philosophy. But when the crypto exchange failed, he had to change his plans. This made the ending of the book exciting.

Matthew Snyder, the writer’s agent, said that the story would be about a rivalry between Bankman-Fried and Changpeng Zhao, the CEO of Binance. Lewis used to say that they were the “Luke Skywalker and Darth Vader of the cryptocurrency world.”

The Hollywood Reporter says that Lewis is selling the rights to turn the book into a movie or TV show, and Apple is close to making a seven-figure deal. Amazon Studios, David Gaiman, who made the Harry Potter movies, and Sugar23, which is working for actor Josh Gad, who played Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak in Jobs, are also interested. Adam McKay, who made The Big Short, might also be a part of the project.

2. Drama from Amazon Prime

Amazon Studios sped up work on its own FTX project by giving Joe and Anthony Russo, who have directed several Marvel movies, a miniseries to make. Variety says that the Russo brothers will make an eight-part series. The screenplay will be written by David Weil, who worked on Amazon’s Hunters and Solo and Apple TV’s Invasion.

The Russo brothers have said that Sam Bankman-Fried is a very mysterious person with complicated and possibly dangerous goals who pulled off one of the most audacious cons in history. The show’s cast hasn’t been announced yet, but several actors from the Marvel Cinematic Universe are talking about how they might be able to join.

3. Graham Moore Project

The Game of Imitation Graham Moore, who has won an Oscar, is going to write and direct a movie based on the FTX fall story that was in New York Magazine.

4. Panoramic Media’s movie

Scott Burns and Jonathan Glickman of Panoramic Media are making plans for another FTX film. Andrew Ross Sorkin is writing the script for the movie. He talked to Bankman-Fried in December 2022.

Glickman has an impressive track record. He used to be President of MGM Motion Picture Group. He has worked on movies like the Netflix show Creed, the movie Wednesday, and several James Bond movies like Skyfall, Spectrum, and No Time to Die.

5. A Full-length Movie from Vice Media

The film SBF and the End of Silicon Valley will come out in the second quarter of 2023. It was made by Vice Media and The Information. The Hollywood Reporter says that it will be based on stories from Vice Motherboard and The Information. It will talk about FTX’s inexperienced leadership, the role of venture capitalists, and Bankman-involvement Freed’s in the “effective altruism” movement.

6. Documentary from Mark Wahlberg’s “Unrealistic Ideas”

Mark Wahlberg’s production company, Unrealistic Ideas, and Fortune magazine announced in February 2023 that they would be working together on a documentary. The project is being billed as a relationship between Bankman, Freed, and CZ. Executive producer Archie Gips calls it a “Shakespeare-style drama.”

Changpeng Zhao himself, as well as the leaders of Binance and FTX, will be in the movie. In addition to Wahlberg and Gypsum, the film will have several Fortune employees and the founder of Unrealistic Ideas, Steven Levinson, as executive producers.
